9 Girl Power Books to Read to Your Baby

We’re big on the books in our family. I’ve been an avid reader since I was young and that passion inspired my English degree and love of writing. So, of course I want to pass that obsession on to my kids! For Ellis’ baby shower, we asked guests to write in their favorite children books instead of giving cards. It was probably our best idea ever because she was born with an overflowing bookcase.

Since we have a daughter, I thought it was important to also fill her shelves with books that celebrate everything #girlpower! And I’ve come across some gems this last year.

1. Little Feminist Board Books

Honestly, Ellis’ favorite part about these books are taking them out of their box and putting them back in, but they’re cute and feature a diverse group of inspirational women. Plus, they’re super easy to fit in the diaper bag for books on-the-go!

2. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls

We just started reading these chapter by chapter, but so far, we like them. My favorite part is that a lot of the women featured I have never heard of (public education at its finest, folks! 🤷🏻‍♀️) so I’m learning new things as well. Even if my one-year-old has no idea what I’m reading her.

3. Ladybug Girl

There are a ton of different books in this series, and all of them are sweet, quick reads. They feature Ladybug Girl (obviously) and her adventures with her family, friends, and loyal dog, Bingo.

4. I Like Myself

This is a fun, rhyming book all about loving who you are no matter what—who can’t stand by that when you’re raising a young girl (honestly, this works for boys too… and some adults… really anyone who could use a good self-confidence boost!)?

5. Dream Big Little One

What I love about this book is that it features amazing black women who made history—some I knew and some I didn’t. Representation truly matters in this world, so having more of it in my house, the better.

6. Tough Chicks

I love, love, love this one. It’s a longer read, so don’t pull out if your babe is fussy. However, the story is all about exploring your curiosity, not following the status quo, and just being YOU. Plus, farm animals. You can’t go wrong with farm animals! 🐥🐥🐥

7. Oops-A-Daisy

This one isn’t exactly “girl power,” but it is a great lesson about not giving up. Which, I think, more girls can benefit from hearing more. There will always be obstacles that will come their way, but learning a little resiliency can take them further.

8. Malala’s Magic Pencil

I’ll admit, I have a girl crush on Malala. She is an amazing role model for girls and her book is a great way for young kids to learn her story (without going too deep into the horror she endured) that is very approachable to all.

9. Dear Girl,

This one is my current favorite because it’s a letter to all girls to be the best they can be. To raise their hands, be unapologetically themselves, and follow whatever dream (or dreams) they have! Also, this one is a perfect book to gift to a young girl in your life. Whether it’s your daughter, niece, friend’s girl, etc. It’s perfect for any type of relationship.

If I come across more that we fall in love with, I’ll update the list! And although I’m writing this from a “girl mom” perspective, I think all of these books can be enjoyed by both girls and boys. A little more girl power in all our lives can’t hurt, right?

Add these to their bookshelf!
