Toddler Ice Cream Cone Costume DIY

As you may have seen on Instagram, Ellis is an ice cream cone for Halloween this year! It’s part of a bigger family costume that I’ll share very soon, but I think this could easily stand on its own for any toddler. It’s also very easy to make if you’re Halloween plans are very last minute this year.
First off, this idea originally came from Pretty Life Girls blog, so I want to give credit where credit is due. However, I did tweak the idea a bit.
First the supply list…
Hat. I went this route because we live in the northeast and it’s freaking cold + she can wear it all through winter.
Fabric Paint in desired sprinkle colors. I used pink, yellow, maroon, and purple
Fabric paint brushes or something to “stamp” circles with (I used the ends of wooden dowels I already had)
Paper towels or card board to put on the inside of the clothes to prevent bleeding.
I feel like this DIY is pretty self-explanatory, so I’ll share some quick tips instead. However, if you do have questions, drop them in the comments and I’ll help explain more!
Tip 1: Double layer your paper towels in between the clothes to prevent bleeding. I forgot to do this when I did the back of her shirt and some spots bled through (and it bugs me more than I’d like to admit).
Tip 2: The tutu I link to is made to fit up to 3T so I felt the skirting was too long for what I needed. I ended up cutting about 2-3 inches off the bottom to get a shorter length and ensure her pants were visible.
Tip 3: When gluing the pom poms to the tutu, I would put a small dab of glue on the pom pom directly to prevent a lot of mess. Then I would lift the tule away from any surface and then push the pom pom against the tule until it dried. That way I didn’t risk gluing the tutu to the table or anything else.
Tip 4: If you live in colder climates like we do, get a long-sleeved shirt that’s a little bigger and have them wear a white onesie under it to add some layers and warmth.
Tip 5: If you plan for your toddler to wear these items well past Halloween (because why not?!), follow washing directions that come with the fabric paint to prevent bleeding or the paint washing off completely.
Like I said, I’ll be sharing our full family costumes soon so stay tuned! But in the meantime, here’s a clue 😉
